"Notte di Taranto" by Paolo Fresu, a musical tribute at the Monument to the Sailor on Corso Due Mari

Monumenti di Taranto: il Quadro Sonoro di Paolo Fresu al Monumento al Marinaio
L'opera

The work

“Notte di Taranto” is a two-movement suite designed to soundtrack the Monument to the Sailor in the City of Two Seas.

""Notte di Taranto" wants to honor the Monument to the Sailor and its history. I have tried to express the essence of Taranto and its relationship with the sea through a fusion of musical elements that celebrate both the city's past and present. I hope my music can offer a new perspective on the monument and its significance."

Ispirazione

The inspiration

The composition is in two movements, designed to sonorize the Monument to the Sailor in the City of Two Seas.

Erected at the initiative of Admiral Iachino, commander of the fleet stationed in Taranto during World War II, the monument was conceived in 1974 by sculptor Vittorio Di Cobertaldo to commemorate the famous “Night of Taranto” battle of November 11-12, 1940.

Paolo Fresu’s suite is divided into two distinct movements:

  • MAR PICCOLO is an intimate and almost carefree moment, evoking hope and affection. The simple melody invites to be sung in thought and shared with others.
  • MAR GRANDE is an epic track that represents the courage and pride of Italian sailors. A marked rhythm supports an intense theme that evolves into a repeated melodic cell, symbolizing determination and strength.

This work reflects small and large mixed feelings, telling the essence of man where wars should remain far from the human soul. The figures of the two sailors in the monument, with their arms raised in greeting, embody the gesture of openness and welcome that the Mediterranean requires.

Luogo

The place

Fresu’s composition, displayed at the Monument to the Sailor, one of Taranto’s most important monuments, enriches visitors’ experience with a soundtrack that celebrates the connection between Taranto and the sea.

This installation represents the first Quadro Sonoro placed in a public place on Corso Due Mari in Taranto, marking a new dimension in the commemoration of the monument’s 50th anniversary.
